2. Title: “From Borders to European integration – Itineraries from yesterday to today”-
Type of project: seminar within Europe for Citizens Programme.
Main international meeting dates: 18-21 April 2013
Venue: Warsaw, Poland
Organizer and coordinator: European Intercultural Forum e. V. (lead partner from Germany)
Aim:
The 3-days international seminar in Warsaw will gather 25 participants (15 locals and 10 internationals) within the project “From Borders to European Integration”. The participants will receive background information about how the European integration process has shaped Poland as the political and economically most influential member state which joined in the 2004 “big bang enlargement”. To put it straight: Warsaw in a nutshell offers the antagonistic character of the enlarged European Union. We will discover the complex interplay of historical and political, socio-cultural and economic forces that shape every urban space. Warsaw is a unique and often strange assemblage of the 20st century, a palimpsest on which various historic layers of different remaining formative power overlap: the Russian occupation until the First World War; the renewed capital of Interwar Poland (Second Republic) with its multiculturalism and severe political clashes; the tragedy of the Second World War waging the annihilation of almost one third of its (Jewish) population and the almost total destruction of its centre (during the Warsaw uprising); communist Warsaw widely rejected by its inhabitants; the crazy first ten years of capitalist transformation; and, finally, increasingly affluent post-modern Warsaw trying to replace povertystricken districts by (economized) suburbian dreams and hipsteria. For details and past experiences, check http://www.european-borders.com/
Participants targeted: 2 participants over 18 years old interested in the topic of the project, available to attend all activities for the whole duration of the event, willing to learn more about the social and political situation in Warsaw and the other countries through local trips and non-formal methods.
